| Why
Oxford?
|
|
| If
you have visited Oxford, you know that it is an exceptionally beautiful
city. You might not be aware of the fact that many of Europe's finest
artists spent months or even years in Oxford, immortalizing the city in
countless original works. The volume and range of fine engravings of
Oxford from the late sixteenth through early twentieth centuries is
extraordinary. Cambridge, equally renowned for its beauty, is much less well represented in fine art.
(We have also lived in Cambridge and won't enter the Oxford vs.
Cambridge debate here!) Even when fine plate books were made
of both cities (such as those of Loggan and Ackermann), the Oxford volumes
greatly outsold those of Cambridge. For those of us who love Oxford, collecting these prints is a way of owning a piece of that city's history and of enjoying and displaying the work of some of the greatest artists and print makers who ever lived. Our interests are centered on but not limited to prints of Oxford and Cambridge. We will from time to time list other English topographical prints, such as those by Boydell and Hollar. We also have available many of William Hogarth's satirical engravings, as well as a variety of prints by David Roberts and other famous artists.
